Abstract

Dietary and nutrient recommendations for healthy adults are designed not only to meet basic nutrient needs and prevent nutrient deficiencies, but also to prevent chronic disease. The first Surgeon General’s Report on Nutrition and Health in 1988 2 brought together a substantial body of research documenting that diet was a key factor in the development of chronic diseases and conditions such as coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. The following sections describe the most recent nutrient recommendations and dietary guidelines and provide information on current nutrient and food intake of adults as compared to those recommendations.
