Abstract

The macrominerals are mineral elements required in gram quantities on a daily basis by humans. The macrominerals include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. These elements are needed for critical functions that include electrolyte balance, signal transduction, enzyme function, energy metabolism, and bone formation and maintenance. These elements also can have detrimental effects when intakes exceed homeostatic control mechanisms. Thus, intakes of these nutrients that are neither too low nor excessive are needed for health and well-being.
