Abstract

In its simplest form, the regulation of body weight involves a negative feedback loop where factors generated in proportion to body fat act centrally to control energy intake and expenditure. 1 , 2 It involves hormones secreted in proportion to body fat that are able to communicate with the brain by binding to their receptors within the central nervous system (CNS), 3 which is a confirmation of the lipostatic hypothesis proposed by Kennedy. 4 This review will focus on the regulation of food intake by adiposity signals that begin as peripheral circulating factor that communicate with the brain in a negative feedback loop.
