The role of “security” in environmental fluid dynamics (EFD) is as a cross-cutting topic that spans from flows in urban environments to groundwater flows, and then on to energy security and beyond. Indeed, the field is so wide that the best we can hope for is to give a flavor of EFD and related security research that is taking place at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as an indication of the range of research that is currently being performed at practically every research institution in the world. A complimentary review from Settles (2006) discusses the role of fluid dynamics in homeland security, and provides a useful extension beyond the EFD processes of interest here.
