Abstract

Cancer is a highly complex disease caused by altered DNA. Some of these alterations may be inherited from parent by offspring and some somatic resulting from mutational and epigenetic events (Ponder 2001). The genomics of cancer cells are studied in order to characterize the disease at the molecular level, identify new therapeutic targets, and develop new molecular diagnostics for optimizing individualized treatment. The advent of high-throughput DNA microarrays, which allow the simultaneous measurements of the level of expression for tens of thousands of genes present in a collection of cells, has greatly stimulated these studies.
