In prokaryotes and eukaryotes, the binding of proteins to specific DNA sequences is important to the regulation of many cellular processes; replication, recombination, repair, and transcription. Gene expression in eukaryotic cells is regulated by cis -acting regulatory elements and trans -acting regulatory factors which control transcription initiation of the genes. Over the years, many DNA sequences responsible for this regulation have been identified, and special proteins binding to these regulatory sequences have been classified.
