Abstract

Acid sulfate soil materials are distinguished from other soil materials by having properties and behavior that have either (1) been affected considerably (mainly by severe acidification) by the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) or (2) the capacity to be affected considerably (again mainly by severe acidification) by the oxidation of their RIS constituents.
