Abstract

Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is the change in electrical resistance of metallic layered systems when the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic layers are reoriented in relative to one another under the application of an external magnetic field [1,2]. As was discussed in Chapter 4, GMR originates from spin-dependent electronic transport intrinsic to magnetic metal systems. The discovery of GMR has stimulated significant progress in the theory of spin-dependent transport. This chapter addresses the theoretical understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for the spin-dependent conduction in magnetic metallic multilayers and complements previous review articles devoted to theory of GMR [38].
