Abstract

Technologies that control and manipulate matter on the nanoscale will play a key role in the coming decade. We expect nanotechnology to play a key role in medicine, biotechnology, electronics, and in materials research and development. Richard Feynman foresaw the challenges and expectations that come along with the exploration of the “nanocosmos.” In his famous talk, “There is plenty of room at the bottom,” at the Caltech University in 1959 he addressed the “[…] problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale […]” and formulated the fundamental question: “How do we write small?” This is yet to be answered completely.
