Abstract

Nowadays, a variety of methods (lithography, epitaxial growth, colloidal chemistry) allow the fabrication of very small islands of metals or semiconductors, wherein the electron motion is confined within nanometer ranges. These methods are usually called quantum dots (QDs), and were extensively investigated in the last few years (Kastner 1993, Kouwenhoven and Marcus 1998).
