Abstract

A digital camera that costs less than a $100 has a resolution of 20 megapixels. Given the low price of sensors in the optical range, most of us do not feel the necessity to apply compressed sensing for imaging. We are lucky that the optical response of silicon matches that of the human eye; therefore, whenever there is a breakthrough in miniaturizing silicon technology, the camera industry benefits without breaking a sweat. That’s the reason we have seen digital cameras costing less than $100 to pack in more pixels every year, starting from around 5 megapixels until about a decade back to 20 megapixels today.
