The spectrum of topological modular forms (TMF) was first introduced by Hopkins and Miller [53], [48], [47], and Goerss and Hopkins constructed it as an E ∞ ring spectra (see [17]). Lurie subsequently gave a conceptual approach to TMF using his theory of spectral algebraic geometry [69]. Lurie’s construction relies on a general theorem [70], [71], which was used by the author and Lawson to construct spectra of topological automorphic forms (TAF) [19].
