Abstract

The objective of sample size calculation is to select an appropriate sample size so that not only the Type I error probability can be controlled under the specified level when the null hypothesis is true, but also to assure sufficient power for detection of a clinically meaningful difference when the alternative hypothesis is true. This entry reviews the sign test for comparing median and tests for independence and also provides simulation results and numerical examples.
