In clear shallow water (e.g., coral reefs), a fraction of the visible light from the sun penetrates into water, gets scattered in water or reflected at the bottom, and reaches the optical sensor on satellites and aircraft. Reflectance models, by approximating the in-water radiative transfer processes, formulate the fraction (reflectance) as a function of variables including water depth, bottom reflectance, and water optical properties. This entry introduces two types of reflectance models commonly used for shallow water remote sensing of these variables.
