Abstract

Images often need to be analyzed with respect to context, either in space or time, or depending on many factors. One way to do this is through probabilistic models, such as Markov random fields (MRFs). These rely on estimated parameters of some experimenter-specified model for the scene. This entry introduces the basic concepts necessary to understand MRFs and provide a few insights into several statistical regularities that can be detected with them.
