Abstract

With the rapid development of information technology and remote sensing (RS) sensor technology, modern RS data sources have been enriched. Due to improvements in spatial resolution, the file size of a single RS image has increased from megabytes to gigabytes. At the same time, the demand for more accurate RS data and shorter processing times presents a challenge for researchers in the field. How to obtain Earth observation data rapidly through RS technology and effectively obtain useful information from these large quantities of RS images have become very hot research subjects. In particular, it is now necessary to address the challenge of high performance computing (HPC) for large-scale RS data processing. Parallel computing based on computer clusters has been the mainstream approach and the most efficient way to enhance overall algorithm performance. With the evolution of computing technologies, some researchers have also explored new HPC technologies based on multiple cores, graphics processing units, Intel Many Integrated Cores, cloud computing, and big data computing platforms to process large-scale RS images.
