Abstract

Image inpainting is the process of reconstructing or altering the image in an undetectable manner. The goals and applications of inpainting are numerous—from restoration of damaged paintings and photographs to the removal of selected objects. Inspired by the professional art restorers, image inpainting techniques have evolved in the recent past. This entry presents the evolution of image inpainting techniques classified in different categories. For each category, appropriate classification have been made based on the fundamental technique used for inpainting. The pioneer techniques for each category are described in detail. Possible variations in each category are described for clear understanding of a reader. Appropriate comparison has been done in order to highlight the advantages of the techniques over other.
