Abstract

In recent scenario, the ability to reliably identify individuals in real time is a fundamental requirement in majority of the applications such as forensics, government, and commercial domain. Biometrics refers to the automated measurement of ubiquitous and unique measureable characteristics of an individual, which distinguishes an individual from the mass. Biometric technologies often are just a part of the security system, but it has a crucial role in the layering of increased security in the system. The design of a multibiometrics system in real-time applications is an exciting research due to the limitations of unimodal biometric systems. Though biometric system provides security, it is unsafe due to various attacks on it. The two most security threats to a biometric authentication system are spoofing and template breaching in the database. Thus, it is required to address the issues that make the system unsafe and provide the solution. The critical issues such as template protection and fusion strategies in the design of such systems are discussed in this entry. After reviewing multibiometric approaches, challenges, and integration strategies, some open research problems are suggested.
