Processors communicate with other processors, memory, and other shared resources for fast computations. These communications take place over an interconnection network. The performance of the communications and, in turn, the computations made by the processors, as well as the scalability of these multiprocessor systems, depend on the characteristics of the interconnection network used. This chapter introduces some of the interconnection networks used by multiprocessor systems and their properties.
