Abstract

Structural stability is a subject which sets the design of precast concrete framed structures apart from other types of multistorey buildings by the need to satisfy the lateral and vertical strength, stiffness, ductility and robustness of the entire frame using discrete structural elements and connections. Figure 7.1 shows an example of where discrete structural wall elements are to be tied into the beam–column skeletal frame. It is one of the least-understood aspects of precast design and yet has not been studied widely by researchers in favour of studying the performance of individual elements. There are a few exceptions, namely, the PRESSS program (e.g. Priestly et al. 1999), full- and model-scale testing of precast floor plates and frames (e.g. Schoettier et al. 2009, see Elliott and Jolly 2013, Figure 8.2) and the work on stability mechanisms and catenary action following the loss of bearing elements due to accidental loading, encapsulated by the fib Bulletin (fib 2012).
