Abstract

The control of any process requires a clear and complete understanding of what happens in the process. That process knowledge base is acquired from a solid background in the engineering science principles that relate thermodynamics, mass and heat transport, and reaction kinetics to the process. The proper combination of concepts from these disciplines plus their integration with an appreciation of the expectations of the processes sensors, controllers, and final control elements (FCEs) leads to a control scheme that meets the controlled expectations for the process. Even after these skill-set hurdles have been surmounted, the major challenge of transmitting the information embedded within a control scheme to all personnel involved in the control of the process has to be addressed.
