Abstract

In this chapter, I will describe the measurement and control strategies that are required to automatically protect against the repetition of such oil well accidents as the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in 2010. Here, I will concentrate on the safety automation in the oil industry. I will use the BP accident to show how proper automation could have saved some 11 lives and prevented the spilling of 4.9 million barrels of oil (210,000,000 US gallons; 780,000 m3) onto an area of 30,000 square miles on April 20, 2010.
