Transportation sensors use a wide variety of technologies to detect vehicles (Figure 7.15a). Modern devices operate based on the change of physical properties caused by the presence of objects like changes in magnetic fields, pressure (or weight), sound, radio, or light. Similar sensors used in rail, aviation, and maritime applications are not covered here. Refer to the bibliography for more information on these sensors.
