Abstract

The increasing complexity of ores and recycled materials obliges research into innovative methods for metal separation and purification. Selective leaching may offer an ecological alternative or a complement to bulk smelting. The principles involved in determining the most advantageous agent to oxidize, reduce, or sequester a specific metal are discussed. Examples are given for precious and base metal, as well as actinide selective leaching.
