Abstract

The electric and magnetic properties of materials are a measure of their response to stimulation by external electric and magnetic fields, respectively. They are intrinsic properties of matter determined by the extent of interactions with an external electric or magnetic field at all levels of organization within matter including structural, molecular, atomic, and electronic. The electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are the properties used to characterize and quantify these interactions. The electrical properties used to characterize non-metallic materials are commonly referred to as dielectric properties and will be referred to as such throughout this chapter.
