Nanoplasmonic optoelectronics, a subject too immature for the first edition of the book, but now well developed in the research laboratory and poised to play an important role in the future development of novel optoelectronic devices and systems, is the focus of this forward-looking chapter. We do not cover here nano-optoelectronics, with its focus on quantum dots, wires, and well, especially when used in laser diodes, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and photodetectors of various kinds, as these aspects at the nanolevel have been intensively researched and reviewed (Saleh and Teich, 2007) these past 20+ years and described in Chapters 10–19 in this handbook.
