Abstract

Kinetic propellant pumps are vacuum devices that operate with various fluids to obtain pumping effects. At higher pressure, fluids (liquid water, steams, or oil vapors) are allowed to pass via nozzles to form fluid jets or molecular vapor beams with high-collective directional velocities. Gas molecules diffuse into these jets and beams, and in mutual interaction, the gaseous molecules accept the velocity of the fluids and they are carried from the pumped space away to appear on the other sides of the jets or beams. Thus, gases are displaced from the pumped volume by the speeding fluid molecules due to the transfer of their momenta to gaseous molecules. This chapter discusses water jet pumps, vapor steam jet pumps, ejector pumps, and diffusion pumps.
