Abstract

At free molecular conditions, gases flowing through ducts are slowed down due to their friction with the duct surfaces. Similarly, fast-moving wall surfaces may drive gases into motion and transfer them from one place to another, owing to the same friction phenomenon. The friction (drag) forces are used in molecular drag pumps that are constructed with channels in either stator or rotor to obtain practical pumping effects. The gas transfer due to the drag forces is greater when the wall velocities increase close to the levels of the mean thermal velocities.
