Abstract

Green alternative energy resources such as methanol (C1 alcohols), ethanol (C2 alcohols), and higher alcohols (C2 +) are increasingly arousing a keen interest in the field of liquid transportation fuel production and utilization, as they are important additives to fossil fuels in the foreseeable future, and if science continues to progress, they might also provide an excellent alternative to fossil fuels. This work presents an in-depth review of the state of the art of the thermochemical routes to produce such alcohol fuels from biomass-based feedstocks considered as the most important renewable energy source for this century.
