Abstract

Lipids derived from nonfood feedstock (plants or animal fats) can be converted to diesel, and jet fuels range as alternative drop-in fuels. This helps in increasing the energy security and addressing the environmental concerns arising from greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions. This chapter focuses on characterization and conversion of lipids to different kinds of biofuels including biodiesel and biojet fuels. Types of catalysts and processes used in hydroprocessing of lipids are discussed. The conversion of triacylglycerols (TGs) to biofuels is the major focus of this chapter. Microalgae, which are in their developing stage of research as a source of lipids for liquid hydrocarbon, are not discussed in this chapter.
