Abstract

Decarbonizing air transportation can reduce the impact of the aviation sector on global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and thus represents a key goal for the air industry. Among other possible measures, shifting to renewable fuels is one of the most effective and feasible approaches in the short term. Aviation biofuels can be made from biomass through biochemical, thermochemical, or hybrid processes, with feedstock ranging from lipidic to lignocellulosic or sugar-based matter. Aviation biofuels represent a challenge, given the strict fuel specifications and qualification procedures. This chapter reviews the issue, addressing the technologies, market, and perspectives involved.
