Abstract

Zintl phases have enjoyed a rich history of scientific study since their initial investigation by Edward Zintl1–7 and have recently gained interest for use in TE devices for power generation because of their intrinsic “electron–crystal, phonon–glass” nature.8 Zintl compounds are made up of cations and anions with a significant difference in electronegativity to completely allow electron transfer. The Zintl anions provide the “electron–crystal” electronic structure through the covalently bonded network of complex anion or metalloids, whereas the cations in Zintl phases act as the “phonon glass” characteristic. The low lattice thermal conductivity can be expected in this complex structure, and the transport properties can be tuned by alloying in terms of a wide variety of compositions in the same type structure.
