The work of A Geim and K. Novoselov has made possible practical applications of graphene, a new class of two-dimensional (2D) that are large enough to be used in devices. The practicality comes from the fact that one-atom thick layers are able to conduct with virtually massless carriers with almost no scattering. 2D systems, however, do not exist as such in the real world and the notion of two dimensions apply only to certain physical effects such as spins, and the cases when a motion in the third dimension is restricted by a single quantum state.
