Abstract

There is one Earth with currently close to 8 billion human inhabitants. How much resources can humans use from the environment and still be within the limits? This chapter deals with the physical, psychological, and ethical aspects that constrain growth and draws upon historical narratives that identify movements to incorporate limits into political and socio-economic decisions. An improved and widespread ecological literacy among the population would help understand and implement concepts such as carrying capacity, ecological footprint, and ecological biocapacity.
