Abstract

The part of the magnetic field that does not embrace both stator and rotor windings, called generically leakage field, being mostly in air, is decomposed in differential (space harmonics), slot (distinct for different practical slot geometries), and zig-zag – airgap and end-connection components to give rise to respective leakage inductance components in the stator and the rotor (Lsl and Lrl). This important aspect of IM technology is presented quantitatively in ample detail. Numerical examples illustrate the magnitudes, and very recent refined calculation methodologies of leakage inductances – with finite element modelling (FEM) validation – are synthesized (new). The stator and rotor phase resistances (Rs and Rr) are calculated too.
