Abstract

The name chili pepper (also chile pepper, chilli pepper, or simply chili) is from Nahuatl. Chili is the fruit of plants from the genus Capsicum and members of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Chilis are widely used in many cuisines throughout the world to produce a spicy flavor in food. The substances present in chili that give chili peppers their intensity when ingested or applied topically are capsaicin and related compounds known as capsaicinoids.
