This chapter is devoted to graphical models in which the observed variables are categorical, that is, whose state space consists of a finite number of values. Although the interpretation of a graphical model and the inferential questions of interest usually do not depend on the kind of variables involved in the analysis, the effective specification of the problems and the techniques for statistical analysis differ from case to case. An essential ingredient for the implementation of statistical techniques is the specification of a suitable parameterization of the model, and indeed the present chapter is mostly focused on this issue.
