Eutrophication is a natural process involving the nutrient enrichment of surface water and the subsequent impacts on water quality and the aquatic ecosystem. However, as a natural process, it takes generations, or even thousands of years, for eutrophication to cause significant changes. The acceleration of the process, known as cultural eutrophication, is of the greatest concern to water quality and the health of aquatic systems.
