Abstract

All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetization has recently emerged as a fascinating discovery with both fundamental and applied aspects. The latter, however, depends on our ability to demonstrate the nanoscale realization of this phenomenon. Apart from the intrinsic material-related behavior of AOS, two more practical problems need to be solved. First of all, this is the focusing of light into a nanometer-sized spot. Second, this is the stability of the written domain. This chapter reviews the various aspects of the nanoscale realization of the AOS, demonstra ting reproducible all-optical magnetic recording down to 50 nm.
