Abstract

In 1965, Gordon Moore enunciated that the miniaturization rate of electronic devices would double every 2 years. Since then, several efforts were made to keep the validity of the so-called Moore’s Law. However, at the end of 1990s, performance issues due to shrinking the characteristic dimension of transistors emerged. Companies as such as Intel and IBM invested in new materials and fabrication techniques to overcome those problems. An example of a new technique is stretching silicon lattice by layering it in another crystal (Hain 2015).
