Abstract

Chapter 4 begins the application section. The current interruption process for low current and high current vacuum arcs is discussed. The voltage escalation event that can occur if the contact gap is very small at the ac current zero is also examined. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the phenomenon of contact welding. It presents a model of the threshold welding current as a function of closed contact force for contacts which have to remain closed while passing high short circuit currents.
