Abstract

This chapter provides a full overview of mucoadhesive systems for drug delivery purposes, beginning with a detailed description of bioadhesion and mucoadhesion, the bioadhesion of polymers, the nature of mucus, the theories of mucoadhesion, and the factors affecting mucoadhesion. Also described are the techniques used for the determination of mucoadhesion, the most common routes of mucoadhesive administration, mucoadhesive materials, the most examples of formulations studied and alternative uses of mucoadhesive materials. An overview of the recent advances and discoveries in mucoadhesive polymers and mucoadhesive delivery systems is also reviewed.
