Abstract

The nonlinear effects are enhanced dramatically and new phenomena are observed in the so-called highly nonlinear fibers, which include conventional, tapered, and microstructured optical fibers made from silica or from other glasses with greater intrinsic material nonlinearities. This entry provides an overview of such kinds of fibers, as well as of some novel dispersive and nonlinear effects exhibited by them.
