Abstract

This entry deals with the various materials that can be used to make optical fibers and consider both the factors that determine their attenuation and some of the methods used for their manufacture. The propagation characteristics of light traveling along an optical fiber are examined, and the causes of time dispersion and the methods that can be used to minimize it are detailed.
