Abstract

Compression techniques that divide an image into partitions called encoding blocks and then process the blocks individually facilitate adaptation to the changing image conditions. These block-wise techniques can process a block of pixel values, a transformed version of the pixel values, or derived attributes of the encoding block, thus providing higher compression than techniques that compress individual pixels. This entry provides an overview of image compression methods and transform coding techniques.
