Abstract

The transfer of a source-bearing signal to the processor must be accomplished by a spatial light modulator (SLM). Spatial light modulators behave as an interface between the information source and processor, or a converter by writing the source-bearing information onto the input light of the processor. This entry provides a general definition of the addressing schemes, introduces general descriptions and important specifications, or electrically addressed SLMs and optically addressed SLMs. The magneto-optic SLMs, liquid crystal SLMs, and liquid crystal light valves are introduced, and structures, operations, and relative physical effects are described.
