Abstract

Reticle-based infrared missiles have been available for operational use for almost 50 years. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and simple to operate. Reticle systems have been constantly improved to increase range and the probability of hitting the targets. The purpose of this entry is to provide an introduction to reticle seeker operation as employed in surface-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles. Target and background characteristics will be briefly discussed and then the basics of reticle operation will be reviewed.
