Abstract

Machine vision is concerned with the engineering of integrated mechanical–optical–electronic-software systems for examining natural objects and materials. This entry explains how machines can be provided with visual sensing, thereby enabling them to perform a wide variety of tasks for the manufacturing industry, such as inspecting, counting, grading, sorting, matching, locating, guiding, recognizing, identifying, reading, classifying, verifying, measuring, controlling calibration, and monitoring.
