Abstract

Canada’s libraries and archives have evolved from the first library in 1605 to become modern knowledge and cultural heritage institutions in the twenty-first century. Key developments in this evolution are outlined in this entry together with a profile of 13 major Canadian archives and libraries. The roles and issues of national library and archival associations and groups are examined as well as the development of professional education in Canada. It concludes with a discussion of a number of challenges and issues facing Canada’s libraries and archives.
