Abstract

Bibliographic control, the larger field of which cataloging is a part, is discussed in order to provide the context for cataloging. A major product of the process of cataloging, the catalog, is explained in order to underscore why cataloging is needed. The processes for completing original cataloging are delineated, followed by a brief look at cooperative and copy cataloging. Methods for encoding metadata records for online storage and display are outlined.
